I'm an aloof, arrogant prick. Good-looking. Slender. Impatient. Ambitious. Temperamental. Successful. I'm young enough to do it and old enough to do it right. I don't drink, smoke or stick needles in my arms. I'm lots of fun — but I won't make time in my busy schedule for petty drama or hysterics. I'm well-educated, creative, quick-minded and free. I don't care what anyone else thinks of me. I do what I want, when I want — and I get what I want. But you've probably figured that out already.
Honestly? I'm pretty happy with where I am. I'm all about creativity and challenges. My career as a writer/journalist allows me that. My editors like it fast and good. So do I. Deadlines amuse me. My readers love me and hate me. Nothing turns me on like saying exactly what I want to say, better than anyone else can say it. But, hey, you can try.
What? You want to know MORE?
I'm a music freak. No, I don't play it or sing it, but .... I think you know what I mean. In fact, I'm wired in to my iTunes right now and Pavement's "Conduit For Sale" is tumbling against my eardrums. By the way, that's not the easiest song to write PROFILES to.
I'm crazy about sports - especially AMERICAN football. You know, the kind with helmets and tackling. I am an award-winning sportswriter by profession, but it's the writing that comes first with me. If you're imagining some foul-smelling, tobacco-juice spitting couch potato who happened to luck into a job that pays him to go to games, erase that picture from your head. I don't chew tobacco, drink beer, play video games or own any baseball caps or game jerseys. I'm a pro. I don't worship the athletes — I just tell their stories, and I get paid pretty handsomely for it.
Politics (local, national and international) also fascinate me. Don't ask me what my "affiliation" is, because I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round, I really love to watch them roll. What I mean is, I'm an observer. I can watch CNN's "Crossfire" and laugh at both sides, which I do — often. Yes, I do vote.
A lot of guys talk about how they like to work out. I grudgingly stay in shape. I take walks (with my iPod) when it's not freezing outside and I hit the pool for a few laps when I can. I don't lift weights, climb mountains, kick-box or any of that crap. No, I don't surf, either, because there is no "coast of Illinois." I'm naturally slender and I stay too busy with life to sit on my ass and grow fat.
Of course, for me, "staying busy" often entails sitting on my ass in front of a computer, hammering away on deadline at some game story, column or feature article that thousands of folks are going to read the next morning. Believe me, it can be a good way to work up a sweat. Hmmmm, maybe I should take steroids, to become a bigger, stronger and faster typist!
In my free time, well, I just keep on writing. You'll see what I mean as you read my blogs. I also do a fair bit of reading, television viewing and other indescribable time-wasting activities. I spend a lot of time with my daughter too. She's 12 years old and means the world to me.
